At the April 19 Smithsonian debate about
the authorship controversy, it wasn't clear which side had won--but
Chasing Shakespeares certainly did. Moderator William Causey
held up his copy at the podium and told the Smithsonian audience
he had stayed up until 3 AM to read it. Thank you, Bill, for the
good words.
They like us! Early praise for Chasing
Shakespeares:
- A wonderfully entertaining, thought-provoking and highly readable
book--a stunning combination of fascinating fact and exciting
fiction...--Sir Derek Jacobi, noted actor
- A lively, often engagingly profane love song to London, the
Elizabethan age, and our great dramatist
Anyone who enjoyed
(obvious predecessors) A.S. Byatt's Possession or Josephine
Tey's The Daughter of Time will be suitably charmed--and
enlighted. Literate, polished literary entertainment. --
Kirkus Reviews
- Makes the Shakespeare authorship controversy as riveting as
any film noir plot bursting with bodies."--Publishers
Weekly (featured interview)
- Wonderfully entertaining, thought-provoking and highly readable
book--a stunning combination of fascinating fact and exciting
fiction.--Sir Derek Jacobi, noted Shakespearean actor
- One of those novels that get more subtle the more you think
about it....Chasing Shakespeares is a remarkable achievement,
beautifully written, blending history and fantasy, past and present,
ideas and emotions into a seamless whole which is as entertaining
as it is thought-provoking. -- Iain Pears, author of An
Instance of the Fingerpost and The Dream of Scipio
- By page 5 I forgot I was reading to comment and began reading
to devour. Chasing Shakespeares is breezy, erudite,
never ponderous, a love story about how we make our heroes, and
how they make us. -- Gregory Maguire, author of Wicked
and Mirror Mirror
- A brilliant and moving work. Sarah Smith gives Josephine
Tey a run for her money, revealing vividly a slice of history
we never knew we could believe in, intertwined with engrossing
modern characters.--Ellen Kushner, host of National Public Radio's
Sound & Spirit, coauthor of The Fall of the Kings
- Like A.S. Byatt's Possession, Sarah Smith's Chasing
Shakespeares is an English major's dream book. Smith
seamlessly blends a riveting present-day paper chase, fraught
with academic politics and twenty-first century greed, with the
rich and fascinating true history, and mystery, of who really
wrote Shakespeare's plays. Strong settings, appealing characters
and a fast-moving plot make this a literary mystery you can't
put down. -- Kate Flora, author of Liberty or Death
- Romance, intrigue, and the literary whodunnit of our time
- Chasing Shakespeares is a romp and I savored every moment
of it. -- Hallie Ephron, author of Delusion
- Wonderful! In trying to solve the mystery of the authorship
of the plays, Sarah Smith has provided an intellectual treat
for all Shakespeare-lovers. Guaranteed to enthrall, excite,
enrage and enlighten in equal measure. Enjoy the chase. -- Edward
Marston, author of The Bawdy Basket
